Birthdays and Triathlons :)

OK... Race Report.. Where to start?

What a great weekend!!  I haven't in raced in nearly a month and it felt soo good finally getting to pin a number on my shirt again!!  This weekend was extra special because I not only was given the chance to race a beautiful course, but I also got to celebrate my 22nd Bday :)

A few months ago Jenny Skinner asked Ferg and I to do the NB relay with her.  Unfortunately about a month ago she realized that she wouldn't be in town for the race so Fergus and I decided to go ahead and pull a 2 person team effort!!  It turned out really well because the Swim and Run are my favorite legs and Fergus is turning into a wicked-awesome cyclist.

My swim felt great considering it was only my second open water swim of 2009 (my first was Saturday.. lol).  I'm not a huge fan of swimming with my wetsuit on and definitely need to practice more.  My hipflexors were burning after about 500m because of the wetsuit making my legs so buoyant.  I'm also no that comfortable with drafting yet...  I may have accidently stolen a few people's draft feet during the race..  I know this because a few seconds after catch someone's feet I got a smack in the head (which at first I thought was unintentional until the person actually went to grab my wrist and pushed me away!! haha).  So after about 1km I decided to just stick to my own race and go solo.  I managed a 28:30min time which I was pretty happy about.

Fergus was easily seen in transition, sporting his Green Monster Kit (haha!!)..  He had a really great ride, especially considering the weather conditions!!  Victoria had its first rainfall in a while and the residual oil on the roads made for a pretty slick ride!

Luckily, by the time he finished, the rain had quit and I was off on a beauty run in the sunshine :)  The run for this course was 2 x 10km laps around Elk and Beaver Lake.  This is my favorite place to run in Victoria.  Don't have much to complain about in this part..  I may have gone out a little fast in the first lap, ending up with 45/47min splits.  I was also a pretty hurtin unit for the last 3km.  I think this was more due to my blood sugar level though.  I hate eating gels or any refined sugar in general and it was really hard figuring out how to fit in the proper nutrition between a 1.9km swim and a 20km bike.  I ate one gel which went down alright; I took another one but about half way through it I started to gag and couldn't bare another taste.  So I think lack of calories may have been my problem nearing the end.

However all in all an AWESOME race!!  Fergus did a really good job taking care of me (brewing me morning coffee, baking me wheat free banana loaf, bringing my hand warmers!! what a guy!! haha)  After doing the 2 legs, I am feeling a lot more confidant racing this distance and am really excited about racing the entire Half Ironman in Vancouver in a few weeks!!

Just wanted to say a HUGE congratulations to everyone else that was racing and volunteering this weekend!!
